Jestina Mukoko is a Zimbabwean human rights activist. Born in 1967, Jestina is a journalist by training and a former news anchor with the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC). Upon leaving ZBC, Jestina has worked for a number of human rights initiatives. In 2007, she joined Zimbabwe Peace Project (ZPP) as the National Director, until August 2023. In September 2023, she started the JMF, focused on providing accompaniment to victims of violence seeking healing and restoration.
Jestina has become the face of resilience, survival and triumph following her abduction, torture and trial in 2008 and 2009. The story of Jestina’s abduction is documented in her autobiography titled, ‘The Abduction and Trial of Jestina Mukoko – The Fight for Human Rights in Zimbabwe.’
The Abduction and Trial of Jestina Mukoko describes how, still in her night clothes and in front of her teenaged son, she was bundled into an unmarked vehicle and abducted. In flashbacks interspersed with anecdotes about her childhood and family and her work at the Zimbabwe Peace Project (which seemed to be the catalyst for the state’s persecution), Jestina documents what happened to her between 3 December 2008 and her first appearance in court on Christmas Eve of the same year.
